Support-A-Girl

The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.

Our Promise to every Girl and Supporter

Support-A-Girl is our flagship program. It advocates girls’ rights in India through thoughtful training and education, and with financial support from our donors it provides each enrolled girl with the essentials she needs to thrive — education, accommodation, clothing, healthcare and more. Our goal is simple and steady: to protect a girl’s rights and support her until she is well established in her professional life, able to live freely and independently. The program began in the forest villages of Garbhanga and today walks with more girls each year, from their first day of school to a future of their own making.

What your support provides

Every contribution gives a girl more than a handout — it gives her a foundation to build on:

Safe accommodation

a secure place to live and study, so that distance or hardship never forces her out of school.

Quality education

schooling, tuition and learning materials that carry her through every grade.

Good healthcare

regular care that keeps her healthy enough to learn and grow.

A progressive environment

encouragement to dream beyond the roles she was told were hers.

Extra-curricular activities

sport, yoga and creative time that build confidence, friendship and joy.

Vocational training

practical skills that open the door to a livelihood after graduation.

The Program

How the program works

Support-A-Girl follows one girl, year after year, until she can stand on her own. It begins with a careful identification process: our team and volunteers work with families and local schools to find the girls most at risk of dropping out — because of distance, poverty, or pressure to marry early. Each girl admitted to the program receives a complete package of support: tuition, books and learning materials, safe accommodation, healthcare and daily nourishment, so that none of the basics can pull her out of the classroom. Alongside the material support, mentors and volunteers stay close to each girl and her family — tracking her progress, encouraging her through difficult patches, and working with parents to keep her in school. As she nears the end of her education, we help her take the next step — into college, or into our Skills Development program — so that years of support become a livelihood she owns.

Outcomes

What your support has achieved

  • Girls kept in school — supported through every grade, from the classroom towards a career.
  • First graduates — the earliest girls in the program have reached college, the equivalent of 15 years of education.
  • Healthier, safer girls — regular healthcare, nutrition and safe accommodation mean no girl drops out for want of the basics.
  • Families changed — parents who once saw a daughter’s education as a luxury now keep her in school.
  • A path onward — graduates move into our Skills Development program and towards independent livelihoods.

There are many people who are eager and willing to support a good cause, but hesitate because they do not know what happens to the money they donate. With Sneha Karma, I don't have to worry about this.

Looking ahead

Our next step is to connect graduating girls with trainee and internship programs at corporates and small businesses around Guwahati, so they get an equal opportunity at full-time work and become truly independent.

Sneha Karma Foundation Scholarship Program. School is where a girl’s journey begins — but for many of our girls it is also where it would once have ended. As our first students near the end of their schooling, we are seeing a new and growing need: the ambition to go further. These girls are not content simply to finish school. They want to become doctors, engineers, IAS officers, teachers and entrepreneurs — and that means college, professional courses, coaching and years of study that their families cannot afford. Educating a girl through school is not enough if the door to higher education then closes in front of her. The Sneha Karma Foundation Scholarship Program is our answer. It will carry promising girls from our programs, and from the communities we serve, through college and professional education — covering tuition and fees, books and study materials, safe accommodation, coaching and exam preparation, and a mentor who stays with them through the years. Every scholarship turns an ambition into a plan, and a plan into a profession. Our goal is simple: no girl with the talent and the will should ever be stopped by the cost of her next step.
