Girls Support

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

OUR FOCUS AREA

Girls Support

Keeping a girl in school — safe, healthy and learning — and carrying her all the way to college.

Once a family believes in their daughter’s future, she needs a real chance to build it. Girls Support is where that belief becomes a classroom, a uniform, a book and a meal — and, in time, a college degree.

Rural India loses far too many girls at predictable points: when money runs out, when the school is too far, when a marriage is arranged, when college feels out of reach. This focus area is designed to meet her at each of those points, and to make sure none of them ends her education.

Girls Support

What this focus area covers

We cover the true cost of a girl’s education — tuition, uniforms, books and stationery, a nourishing midday meal, safe accommodation where distance is a barrier, and regular healthcare. Each girl is paired with caring adults who watch over her progress, guide her choices and step in when she is at risk of being withdrawn.

And we stay with her as she grows. Support that ends at school leaves a girl at the very doorstep of her future; so where she is ready, our Scholarship program carries her into higher education, mentoring and coaching, until she can stand on her own.

Support-A-Girl

Support-A-Girl is our flagship program: it keeps a girl in school, year after year, until she can stand on her own. It covers the real costs of an education — tuition, uniforms, books and stationery, a nourishing midday meal, safe accommodation where distance is a barrier, and regular healthcare. Each girl is paired with caring mentors who watch over her progress and stand beside her family when pressure builds to withdraw her early or arrange her marriage. Because support must not stop at the school gate, it follows her through every grade, building the confidence, safety and stability she needs to keep learning.

Scholarship

The Scholarship program carries a girl beyond school into higher education — the step she is most likely to lose to cost. It funds college tuition and fees, accommodation and living support where studying means living far from home, and the books, materials and technology her course requires. Just as importantly, it provides mentoring and coaching: a steady adult who tracks her progress, guides her choices and helps her through the hard weeks, plus career guidance for interviews and a first job. A scholarship is the difference between a girl who watched her future close and a young woman who graduates into a career she chose.

Scholarship

An educated girl is not just one life changed — she is a family, a village and a generation uplifted.

Prashant Godiwala

Founder, Sneha Karma Foundation

Who this serves

Every girl whose education is at risk for reasons that are fixable — cost, distance, illness, or a family’s belief that a daughter is not worth the investment.

How we approach it

We keep girls in school and carry them through to college, removing each barrier in turn and adding health, protection and digital skills so that staying in school is also staying safe and ready for the future.

What progress looks like

Girls completing school, reaching college, and entering careers — with the earliest participants now at the equivalent of 15 years of education.

Girls' Education — what this focus area sets out to do

Executive Summary

Support-A-Girl and our Scholarship programme are the heart of Sneha Karma Foundation's Girls Support focus area. Support-A-Girl keeps a girl in school by covering the real, full cost of her education — tuition, uniforms, books, a nourishing midday meal, healthcare and mentorship — so that poverty can never be the reason she stops learning. Our Scholarship programme takes over at the point where most support ends: it carries that same girl beyond school and into higher education, so that the cost of the next step never ends her journey. Together they form a single, continuous path from the classroom to college.

Statement of Need

The families we serve are not indifferent to education; they are constrained by cost. When money is short, the school fee, the uniform, the books and the meal are the first things cut, and for a girl the cut is permanent. A single missed year becomes a withdrawal, a withdrawal becomes domestic work, and domestic work becomes early marriage. The cost that ends a girl's education is rarely large in absolute terms — it is simply larger than a household living close to the margin can bear.

The second, less visible gap is the transition after school. Girls who beat the odds and complete secondary education then stop, because the fees, living costs and lost income of college are beyond reach. The result is a generation of young women whose education stops exactly where it would begin to pay. Closing that transition gap is among the highest-return interventions available: a girl who reaches higher education earns dramatically more over her lifetime, and her daughters will be educated too.

Project Goal

To ensure that financial hardship never ends a girl's education — keeping at-risk girls enrolled through school and enabling them to continue into and complete higher education.

Objectives

1. Identify and enrol girls at genuine risk of dropping out, using school and community referral. 2. Cover the full cost of schooling — tuition, uniforms, books, midday meal, healthcare, and exam fees — for each supported girl for the full academic year. 3. Provide regular mentorship and academic support so that supported girls progress rather than merely attend. 4. Carry successful school completers into higher education through scholarships covering fees and living costs. 5. Track each girl by name through enrolment, attendance, examination results and progression to the next stage.

Expected Outcomes and Impact

We expect supported girls to remain enrolled through the year, to improve their attendance and examination results, and to progress to the next stage at far higher rates than unsupported peers. The wider impact compounds: educated girls marry later, earn more, raise healthier children, and become the first generation in their families to expect education for a daughter. Beyond school, scholarships produce graduates, and graduates produce role models in villages that previously had none.

Sustainability and Scalability

The model is deliberately simple and cheap per girl, which makes it both sustainable and replicable. It requires no buildings and no heavy overheads, and it scales one girl at a time. Its durability comes from its results: girls who complete their education become the strongest possible argument for supporting the next girl.
